Why is Your Stuff so Cheap?

Cheap Price Doesn't Always Mean Cheap Quality

"Why is your stuff so cheap?" We hear that question more times than I care to tell you. So often cheap price is equated with cheap quality. But it doesn't have to be.

motorcycle rain suit
More often than not, you're paying for the "privilege" of wearing somebody's name splashed across your back. At Double D Cycles, we forgo the logos and charge you what the item should really be priced at. This is the principle upon which Double D Cycles was built: To give you the same quality (or better) than you could find at the dealership at a price that doesn't break the bank.

Quality Materials, Quality Construction, Guaranteed

Our leather items are constructed with full grain leather - not the split hide stuff that feels like plastic and cracks at the first sign of cold weather. Heavy duty zippers and hardware for long-lasting performance. Our boots are constructed with the same heavy duty full grain leather and Goodyear welt construction as the big boys use.

leather motorcycle vests

And if you're not happy, you can send it back to us for a refund. With no hassles.

So, why is our stuff so cheap? It's not. It's priced reasonably because we're here to make a living and serve the motorcycle community - not make a fortune off the backs of fellow bikers.

Stop by the Double D Cycles online store. See what we have to offer at a price you can afford and feel free to contact us with any questions. Come ride with us!

The Best Motorcycle Rides in America

Our Back Yard Has One of the Best

Pretty much running through our back yard is the Great River Road. The Great River Road is a stretch of Highway 35 that runs down the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River from the northern part of the state to Iowa. It gently winds along the edge of the state with the Mississippi River on one side and scenic bluffs on the other side. The Great River Road takes you through 250 miles of some of the most beautiful scenery in the Midwest. It's one of my favorites and I feel so lucky to have it so close. To learn more about the Great River Road, visit the website at http://wigrr.com.

How Does Your Favorite Motorcycle Road Stack Up?

We all have our favorite ride. Some of us favor the wide open country roads while some of us love the twisties. The Discovery Channel recently put together their list of the top motorcycle rides in America. You can see their picks here: Best Motorcycle Rides in America.

Was your favorite motorcycle road on the list? Or what additions and subtractions would you make to it?

Do You "Love" Your Bike?

Does your motorcycle have a name?

There are many of us that have a deep affection towards our motorcycles.  I know, to the non-rider it seems a little strange to have an "affection" towards a mechanical object. It's kind of like loving your can opener or taking your hair blow dryer on a date. Yet a lot of us who ride feel a deep emotional connection to our scoots. It's just another one of those things that you can't explain but you feel it if your a motorcyclist. Can you explain it?

www.doubledcycles.com
D-Day and my soul-riding partner "Dixie"

Another strange thing that a lot of us do is name our motorcycles. My Wide Glide's name is "Dixie". There's no huge story behind the name. I just liked it. She was so beautiful and sexy with all her curves that she just seemed like a sweet Southern gal to me and "Dixie" seemed to fit. Does your motorcycle have a name? And if so, how did you come to naming it that?

Sons of Anarchy: Love Em or Hate Em?

Sons of Anarchy gets mixed reviews

Well, it looks like the motorcycle bad boys of Charming are going to be back for another season. Wearing their perfectly matching outfits of KD's sunglasses and leather vests (except for Jax who dons his white tennis shoes), they'll undoubtedly roll back into another season of high drama. But is the show realistic? And does it really matter?

Sons of Anarchy motorcycle biker club

I've been to a lot of motorcycle forums where the posts are so scathing that some of the folks could probably get locked up for "hate speech". There's a lot of haters out there. I've seen everything from "What a bunch of fake posers!" to people making the comments of "A real M/C would never do that!". But let's look at it for what it really is: a television show.

A Soap Opera with Motorcycles

Granted, if you're looking for a peek inside a real motorcycle club, watching the Sons of Anarchy probably isn't going to get you there. And if you watch the show with a critical eye shouting at the TV screen about every little thing that isn't realistic, you probably shouldn't watch the show. It's not supposed to be realistic folks. It's a television drama.

So let's call the show for what it really is: It's a soap opera with motorcycles in it. Nothing more. It's never claimed to be realistic. It's just another television drama like The Sopranos, ER or Lost. Yet, I've never heard anyone ever scream about how those shows are "fake".

So, what do you think? Love em or hate em?

And does it really matter?

Women's Rhinestone Studded Shirt with Cross and Angel Wings Design

When we posted this picture a week ago, we had no idea that we'd get the overwhelming response that we did! Well, the first batch hit our door yesterday and they are stunning! "Barbie", our in-house biker babe, tells me I did a great job picking this one out to add to our line of women's shirts.

This gorgeous women's shirt sports the cross and angel wings design on the front as well as having a similar design on the back with the angel wings stretching from the shoulders to the waistline. Both designs are embellished with an ample supply of rhinestones. The style of this shirt really ramps up with the lace side panels and sleeves. And it's made in the USA.

"Barbie" normally wears a size medium and the size medium in this shirt fit her perfectly. This top is available in regular sizes S thru XL and plus sizes 1X thru 3X.

The Ladies Want More Bling!

We've been told by the ladies that we need more "bling". I'm starting to wade into waters here that I personally don't think are too "biker" but as they say, "The customer is always right".

Ladies, even though I think I have good taste, I am still just a guy afterall. What do you ladies think of this one? Rhinestone studded with lace sleeves and side panels. Back design is the same except it also has large angel wings which run behind it from the shoulders down to the waist.

The initial unveiling of this shirt brought rave reviews and we're in the process of bringing some of them in.

Biker or Motorcyclist?

In a motorcycle forum today, a discussion developed around the use of the word "biker". A lot of the folks seemed turned off by the word "biker" preferring to be referred to as a "motorcyclist". Some stated that the word is "a rather crude descriptive term, sometimes crass, and almost always viewed negatively."

While it's true that the stereotypical "outlaw biker" may come to the minds of the non-riding public and I applaud these folks for trying to change public perception, I've never been one to run away from mere words.

My response to them:

"Very true that it's sad that such a simple word can evoke such a range of feelings and perceptions from the non-riding public."

"I have no problem using the word or being referred to as a biker. I think it more aptly describes the connection I have with my bike and the deep feelings I have about riding."

"Plus it's kind of fun to describe myself as a biker and then see the confusion in people's faces when I blow the stereotype that they have in their minds."

So, what are you? A biker or a motorcyclist?

Happy 100th Birthday T-Shirt

We carry a handful of men's T-shirts and women's tops because we know how much the T-shirt is a huge part of the biker's wardrobe. We wear them to affiliate ourselves with a certain club or riding group and even proudly advertise our favorite motorcycle brand across our chests. They become part of our identity and who we are.

The T-shirt celebrates its 100th birthday this year so we thought we'd give you the history of this simple yet personal and much loved article of clothing.

Motorcycle Tires: To Change or Not To Change

Double D Cycles is in a few motorcycle forums and a question came up from one of the members:

"How worn do you let your tires get? My wear bars are showing, but the tire still looks like it has plenty of tread. Hate to change tires if they still have 1,000 miles on them....."

The comments ranged everywhere from the idiotic comment of "I wear mine down to nothing. I love to slip and slide!" to my short and sweet comment of "The wear bars are there for a reason. Why risk it?"

How do you decide when or how often to change the tires on your cycle?

Motorcycle Rights and Freedoms

There are lots of things each of us can do to increase our lifespan, prevent injury or improve our health. Most of know that we will probably live longer if we quit smoking. Most of us know that we could probably lose the extra weight if we didn't eat that burger every day at lunch. And some of us realize that we may escape injury in some situations if we wear certain gear.

Aren't these choices and decisions ones that we should be making for ourselves? Or should we be relinquishing these rights to a government that suggests that we are incapable of controlling our own lives and deciding what's right for ourselves?

I think that most of us motorcyclists (including us folks here at Double D Cycles) are freedom loving folks. We love enjoying the open road on our own terms. Our choice of machine is a very personal one and how we ride, whether it be the highways or the back-country roads, speaks volumes about how our bikes touch our lives.

Now the government tries to tell us what we have to wear. They tell us what we can and can't do to our motorcycles. They harass some of us because we look different. Some areas discriminate against us with motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. Are you going to quietly sit by and watch your freedoms of the open road disappear? Or will you stand with other like-minded motorcyclists and save the lifestyle that we all love so much?

ABATE motorcycle rights
ABATE

Luckily for us, almost every state in the country has an ABATE organization. State ABATE organizations are motorcycle rights organizations dedicated to freedom of the road with a goal to give motorcyclists a strong, united voice with regard to their future, their way of life, their safety and their legal rights as motorcyclists and citizens.

If you aren't a member yet, you really need to be. Most membership dues work out to be just pennies a day. Aren't your motorcycling rights worth at least that much?! Please find your state's ABATE organization on the linked list and find out how you can join the fight. If we don't stand up for our rights as motorcyclists, who else will?

About Us

Want to know a little more about the man behind the curtain?
My first memory of a biker when I was a boy came at the age of eleven while I was living in a small town in Southwestern Wisconsin. One Saturday afternoon, the "boys" came rolling into town on their Harleys and the noise was such that I stopped to watch. And that's when I first saw him! Sammy riding atop his iron steed with his little circular sunglasses and a flowing red beard parted in the middle and flapping behind him in the breeze. That was the moment that I decided - I had to have a motorcycle!

My life took its twists and turns through the years but I never forgot that image of Sammy being free in the wind. I finally got my Harley several years later and quickly learned what freedom felt like. Feeling the wind in my face and the sun on my back is something that one simply can't explain to the non-rider. Being a biker is something that truly takes over your soul. "If I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand." Yeah, I get it now.

Double D Cycles grew out of that young boy's love for motorcycles and wanting to surround my life with everything related to them. We here at Double D Cycles actually ride so we know what you expect for the quality of the things you buy. We will do everything possible to bring you the great products you deserve and will proudly mark those American-made items as "MADE IN THE USA". We will also occasionally post content to our blog to help you get the most out of your items and your time on the road.

- Dean "D-Day" & Karen "Barbie" visiting relatives on Easter morning -

We aren't trying to be the largest supplier of motorcycling clothes and accessories - our goal is to be the best. We want you to feel like a partner with us as we journey down this road. We sincerely hope that the quality and service you receive will make you want to come back and see us again. Twist that throttle and come ride with us.

Want to pay less? We got ya covered

Have you ever seen something really great at the dealership and then had trouble catching your breath after you got a look at the pricetag? Or have you ever spotted something for a great price only to find out that the leather felt like paper-thin plastic? Of course you have and so have I! Me and my riding buddies have spent years tolerating the problem of either getting sub-standard motorcycle clothes and accessories or having to pay too much for the good stuff.

I've spent months scouring motorcycle shops and the internet studying motorcycle products and I've discovered something that we've known all along: A lot of places are getting rich by grossly overcharging us. In my travels through some of the big name dealerships, I've noticed that the quality of most of their products is no better than ours yet their price is double or even triple! In fact, some of our products are EXACTLY the same except for having a certain logo on them. Have you had enough yet?

This was the basis on which Double D Cycles was born. I've been active in the motorcycling community for several years and love surrounding myself with fellow riders and everything motorcycle related. I wanted to give my brothers and sisters of the road someplace they could go where they wouldn't have to mortgage the farm in order to buy something. Sure you can continue to pay $150.00 for a leather vest so you can brag about how much you spent. Or you can pay a lot less and brag about what a great deal you got.

We hope you'll join us on this journey and let us know what you like, what you don't like and what you'd like to see so we can serve you better. In the meantime, please browse our current selection of women's and men's motorcycle clothing.

And please always feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.

Ride free.

Burn-Out Shirts

"I notice you have several women's shirts that are listed as a burn-out. What does that mean?"
women's angel wings burnout shirt
Women's Angel Wings Burnout Shirt

Burnout or Devoré fabric is a material that has been chemically "burned" with an acid to produce sheer areas. This technique can be used on a wide range of fabrics, including t-shirts and velvets. However, the fabric must be a combination of cellulose (plant) fibers (such as cotton or linen) and protein or manmade fibers (such as silk, wool, polyester or nylon). The acid used burns away the cotton, leaving only the protein or manmade fibers behind. This is why the pattern of sheer areas can vary from shirt to shirt. It all depends on where the acid gel came in contact with the fabric as to where the cotton has been burned away. The results can leave behind some beautiful patterns not to mention a sheer and sexy look!

Leather 101

Many different terms are used within the leather garment industry to describe the leather itself. Most people have no idea what these terms mean so we thought it would be worthy to explain the most common ones:
women's leather motorcycle jacket
Women's Leather Motorcycle Jacket

1. "Top-Grain Leather" - When a leather garment manufacturer has a piece of leather sometimes they split the thickness of the leather into two thinner sheets. The top layer which is more visually appealing is used for "top-grain" leather which is typically thinner and more pliable. The surface gets sanded and a finish coat added to the surface which results in a colder, plastic feel and less breathable. It's sometimes referred to as "fashion leather".

2. "Full-Grain Leather" -  Full-grain refers to leather which has not been split or sanded but the manufacturer uses the full thickness of the material. This heavier leather type retains the original grain keeping the fiber strength and durability. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a patina (worn appearance) over time.

3. "Nappa Leather" -  Sometimes Nappa leather gets confused with top-grain leather because of its thinner lightweight appearance. Don't let that fool you though! Nappa leather is a full-grain leather made from unsplit sheepskin. This type is noted for its softness and durability and is often used in high-quality leather products such as high-end furniture and vehicles.

We hope that this helps you wade through the sea of uncertainty during your next leather shopping trip.

Got a leather question? Let us know and we might address it in one of our next posts. Thanks for stopping by!

Please come browse the Double D Cycles website and see our line of leather goods.
